In May, after manually reformatting every page and post of "On a Sandy Beach," I wrote.

"A blogging module needs to be built and added to Pipi 9 CMS. This could then be used to create blog posts using an underlying database, which could be modified to be more useful."

Mike is the inventor and architect of Pipi and the founder of Ajabbi.

The datamodel version 2 to support blogging is now being built. It is designed to support On a Sandy Beach. Yesterday, this Blogger post index was scraped and imported to initially populate the database.

In future, the blogging module will also support other blogs/newsletters, including the Ajabbi Research Monthly Newsletter, which begins next month in October on Substack.

The new database and blogger will be synced while other jobs are completed, including;

  • The tags need consolidating
  • The same tags will form a topic map and be used across Ajabbi
  • etc

Sandy Beach is being reformatted

Mike is the inventor and architect of Pipi and the founder of Ajabbi.

As mentioned on April 6, all of the posts on this blog are being reformatted in preparation for Pipi 9 going into production. 

The content will still be created by a human, but will eventually be stored and accessed via a workflow from a Pipi CMS database. The Pipi CMS will assemble the posts, including references and metadata. The pool of references can then be shared, reducing the work required. The content can then also be shared via newsletters, etc.

Many posts have been converted, and the rest will be altered over the next few days. It mainly affects older material written before February of this year.

I will also let Grammarly loose on anything I previously wrote.

Today, there are 331 posts and 12 pages. Here is a list of things I need to keep track of for the conversion project.

In preparation for the Pipi rollout, I have been making some format changes to On a Sandy Beach, my engineering blog.

I use the blog to write notes for myself to remember where to find information or start on documentation, and I'm happy to share this with anyone interested.

Ajabbi has been set up to make Pipi available for users. Pipi is slowly generating a massive 20,000 + page reference website to help developers use Pipi to build SaaS applications for large enterprise systems. 95% of these pages are hidden while the community helps test the documentation. Frequent changes to the page URLs would mess up Google search results and cause confusion.

Here is a formal description of some metadata used on each blog page. I will update all 330+ pages over the next month.

This metadata will likely change again over time based on feedback.

  • A list of web URLs.

References

  • The what. A short list of key source documents.

Repository

  • The where. A list of breadcrumbs used system-wide in Ajabbi that locates where internal resources exist for further searching. Once these pages are unhidden from Google search, the breadcrumbs will include URLs.

Last Updated

  • The when. The date I last updated the blog page. I often update pages 30-40 times over several months after first publishing. I am a slow writer, so I frequently spot mistakes or missing information weeks later. Grammarly also often finds mistakes.

Update

Compare with Adobe RoboHelp, which is a CMS that can generate help documentation. There are similarities and differences.

I couldn't solve this problem until now because I needed both the Plug-in Engine (plu) and the Learning Object Engine (lob) to be under active development so I could see how they might integrate with the Content Management System Engine (cms). It is not proving to be simple.

Content Management System (CMS)

Since 2004, the CMS has undergone multiple versions and is now fast, robust, and mature. This integration will alter the data model and require a new version.

The CMS will provide all the content.

Metadata

Both the Plug-in and Learning Object engines describe CMS content with additional metadata about:
  • structure
  • relationships
  • names
  • properties
  • permissions
  • etc

Learning Object

Pipi needs learning objects nested in the Diataxis framework to provide structured user training and documentation. I am using a reduced-feature version of the original IEEE-standardised version.

According to Wikipedia, "The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) defines a learning object as 'any entity, digital or non-digital, that may be used for learning, education or training.

Eventually, the Learning Object Engine (lob) will be available to assist enterprise SaaS applications with user documentation.

Micofocus: an example in documentation

The other day, I was looking for Universal Data Models and came across Micofocus docs.

It is a clear example of a metadata database driving template-based documentation for a large system.

  • There is a clear URL structure for each page.
  • automatic diagram generation
  • structure navigation hierarchy
