I will have to give many presentations (talks and demos) in the future, so here is a rough plan that builds on an earlier note from a month ago. Feedback on this is welcome.

Ajabbi slide talks

Mike is the inventor and architect of Pipi and the founder of Ajabbi.

Background

I previously gave hundreds of slide talks to conferences, workshops, and public meetings in NZ. I enjoyed explaining complex things so that anyone could understand. Everything from 30 seconds to 2+1/2 hours. But that was years ago.

As Pipi continues to develop and international interest grows, I will have to give many talks to different audiences in the future. 

The need is now becoming urgent, with requests and opportunities arriving.

What works

I'm also highly visual and prefer to talk about something I can see, like a map, chart, video, gadget, or drawing, rather than read a speech.

What will happen

This is what I thought might work.

  • Design a structured outline of topics to cover.
  • Design a simple uniform slide format.
  • Apart from the title, utility, and end slides, use one slide per minute, following the 5:5:5 rule.
  • Practice delivering some to the fortnightly research group I attend online, as well as to other groups I am a member of.
  • Start rapidly manufacturing slide talks based on the priority of need.
  • Reuse the notes and images from the 650 posts on this blog.
  • Create simple 1-page A4 summary notes for print, hand out, event notices and email invitations.
  • Record the talks with slides in advance and upload them to YouTube as a library.
  • Pre-record short videos of live demos of using Pipi and upload them to YouTube as a library.
  • Save and share the slides using links as PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Adobe PDF. On Slideshare.
  • Automate by using the Pipi CMS Engine (cms) to store, reuse, update, render, and manage metadata, put in the right place, etc

Media Unit Options

Summary

The time is coming when Ajabbi will need much better video communication for recording seminar presentations, live streaming, office hours, interviews, and other purposes.

At the moment, I'm using a laptop camera, while using Zoom, etc, or a small USB attached camera on a tripod. It works, but it could be significantly improved.

Simple and reliable

Recently, I have watched video bloggers who interview guests. Their setup is highly reliable and produces good quality images and sound. Looking at glimpses of the gear in the video, it seems that the Blackmagic Studio Camera and Rhode studio boom arm look good and are popular.

I have some older gear that will suffice for the moment, including high-quality cables, tripods, and microphones.

The gear today is much cheaper and of better quality than it was 10 years ago.

Blackmagic Studio Camera

The main issue is a decent broadcast camera that is small, can be preset and doesn't always require an operator.

Lighting

A simple lighting kit, preferably battery-powered LED. It needs to make anyone look decent. I need to ask around for recommendations.

Camera Lenses

The BlackMagic Studio Camera has a Micro Four Thirds aperture.

Mobility

The whole kit needs to be able to fit into a couple of rugged cases and be taken anywhere.

Gear Budget

A draft list to test my assumptions. Do they work together? Are there better options? Is anything unnecessary or missing?

Looking like $10K. Now I just need to find the money.

FFmpeg 8.0 "Huffman"

A complete, cross-platform solution to record, convert and stream audio and video.

FFmpeg is the leading multimedia framework, able to decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter and play pretty much anything that humans and machines have created. It supports the most obscure ancient formats up to the cutting edge. No matter if they were designed by some standards committee, the community or a corporation. It is also highly portable: FFmpeg compiles, runs, and passes our testing infrastructure FATE across Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, the BSDs, Solaris, etc. under a wide variety of build environments, machine architectures, and configurations.

It contains libavcodec, libavutil, libavformat, libavfilter, libavdevice, libswscale and libswresample which can be used by applications. As well as ffmpeg, ffplay and ffprobe which can be used by end users for transcoding and playing.

The FFmpeg project tries to provide the best technically possible solution for developers of applications and end users alike. To achieve this we combine the best free software options available. We slightly favor our own code to keep the dependencies on other libs low and to maximize code sharing between parts of FFmpeg. Wherever the question of "best" cannot be answered we support both options so the end user can choose.

A new major release, FFmpeg 8.0 "Huffman", is now available for download. Thanks to several delays, and modernization of our entire infrastructure, this release ended up being one of our largest releases to date. In short, its new features are:

  • Native decoders: APV, ProRes RAW, RealVideo 6.0, Sanyo LD-ADPCM, G.728
  • VVC decoder improvements: IBC, ACT, Palette Mode
  • Vulkan compute-based codecs: FFv1 (encode and decode), ProRes RAW (decode only)
  • Hardware accelerated decoding: Vulkan VP9, VAAPI VVC, OpenHarmony H264/5
  • Hardware accelerated encoding: Vulkan AV1, OpenHarmony H264/5
  • Formats: MCC, G.728, Whip, APV
  • Filters: colordetect, pad_cuda, scale_d3d11, Whisper, and others

A new class of decoders and encoders based on pure Vulkan compute implementation have been added. Vulkan is a cross-platform, open standard set of APIs that allows programs to use GPU hardware in various ways, from drawing on screen, to doing calculations, to decoding video via custom hardware accelerators. Rather than using a custom hardware accelerator present, these codecs are based on compute shaders, and work on any implementation of Vulkan 1.3.

Decoders use the same hwaccel API and commands, so users do not need to do anything special to enable them, as enabling Vulkan decoding is sufficient to use them.

Encoders, like our hardware accelerated encoders, require specifying a new encoder (ffv1_vulkan). Currently, the only codecs supported are: FFv1 (encoding and decoding) and ProRes RAW (decode only). ProRes (encode+decode) and VC-2 (encode+decode) implementations are complete and currently in review, to be merged soon and available with the next minor release.

Only codecs specifically designed for parallelized decoding can be implemented in such a way, with more mainstream codecs not being planned for support.

Depending on the hardware, these new codecs can provide very significant speedups, and open up possibilities to work with them for situations like non-linear video editors and lossless screen recording/streaming, so we are excited to learn what our downstream users can make with them.

The project has recently started to modernize its infrastructure. Our mailing list servers have been fully upgraded, and we have recently started to accept contributions via a new forge, available on code.ffmpeg.org, running a Forgejo instance.

As usual, we recommend that users, distributors, and system integrators to upgrade unless they use current git master.
